Each carrier operates on a different zone structure and surcharge logic. DHL uses 14 zones, FedEx uses zones A through Q, UPS uses a hybrid model. I built a single calculation pipeline — volumetric weight conversion, FSC as a percentage of base rate, GST layered on top, margin applied last. Every variable is database-driven, not hardcoded.
Building a custom tracking layer means maintaining separate webhook handlers per carrier — each with different payload structures and update frequencies. AfterShip abstracts all of that with a unified API across 900+ carriers. It was the right infrastructure decision for the scope and timeline.
